My last experience with Tangerine was over a year ago. It was a wonderful dinner of understanding Japanese food and the various rituals the race has adopted for food that they still follow and practice, even in a foreign country such as ours. Read my first review here. Last month a few of us were invited again to experience the Japanese- Indian fusion menu Chef’s Table. So a rainy evening, we headed to the Davanam Sarovar at Madiwala for this themed dinner. An upside of rainy days is that there’s less traffic on the road at times. Tapash and I reached the hotel in a matter of 10 minutes!

Fusion Sushi

The curious thing about Tangerine is that it also has a separate Japanese menu for its clientele, and is known as Fukusuke to its foreign patrons. Our meal started with some wine and Tokoyo Chaat – a spin off from the regular papdi chaat with sunomuno. Fusion sushi followed shortly after. The non-vegetarian variant was tandoori prawns roll with a light wasabi chutney, and the vegetarian was tandoori baby corn rolls. The spiced prawns were a delightful compliment to the sticky rice roll, and soy sauce. The tandoori bhutta fell only a bit short in comparison, but was good too.

Katsu Curry with Rice

The mains were quite interesting, like meal in a bowl. The Katsu Curry was delicious. Yes, Japanese have a lot of popular curries in their cuisine, and rice is a common accompaniment. Udon and bread are often consumed with the japanese curries too. This curry had crumb fried chicken and juicy lamb in a thick brown sauce – delicious and wicked – I couldn’t get enough of it!The dessert, as with most Japanese desserts, didn’t quite satiate my sweet tooth. The sake infused jalebi was quite interesting, didn’t have too strong a flavor of Sake, that’s a good thing. The wasabi ice cream had quite the kick – maybe some extra dribble of honey would have hit the sweet spot.

Chef Kapil Sahi stirred up quite a spread of Indian and Japanese fusion food. These dishes are available upon request, while for the standard Japanese fare, there is a separate menu. For a good and affordable Japanese experience, I would highly recommend a visit to Davanam Sarovar Koramangala.
