A lot of us love the simplicity of Mezze platter, a delicious and wholesome snack tray that spans across the Middle East and Mediterranean region. Typically the platter comprises of breads, hummus, tabbouleh, artichoke hearts, baba ganoush, yogurt, muhammara, pickled vegetables and more! Sumptuous and healthy! But one thing I can’t imagine a mezzo platter without is Hummus. In the recent years, we have seen restaurants bring in flavored hummus like the gorgeous roasted beet root, or the zesty roasted red pepper. It’s primarily made with chickpea, and is uber healthy – so you want to have it at home too. But then the store bought hummus didn’t taste as good, nor had the creamy consistency. In Bangalore, options to get hummus home delivered were limited. Until Yummus came along!

Here we are!

The Yummus Story

Yummus was started by a young couple in Bangalore, health food enthusiasts, who believe in bringing to society delicious food rich in nutrition to make people healthier and the world happier! They found and loved hummus in one of their travels, and here we are! Think of flavoured hummus dips, made fresh and contain zero preservatives. That’s essentially what Yummus brings to the market. There are hummus in 9 flavours, including the classic, and can be ordered in a day’s notice. There are several options of sides as well – like paprika lavash, sesame lavash, and pita breads. The breads have a whole wheat option too. The typical shelf life of the hummus is 3-4 days.

The 3 variants – unboxed!

My Experience

We tried 3 variants of the hummus dips with pita.

Classic Hummus – The classic hummus was rich and creamy, and mildly tangy. The chickpeas and tahini paste honestly can be a meal in itself. It’s not overloaded with olive oil, and I prefer it that way. Keeps it consistent too. Best had on it’s own, as well as with breads.

Basil Pesto – This was my favorite, light green in color and a subtle flavor of basil and an undertone of pesto. It is creamier, and mildly pungent. While the Yummus products have around 3 days of shelf life, I recommend you consume this variant sooner. The basil makes it bitter and sour over time.

Sweet Potato & Chilly – This is a very nice variant – with the natural flavors of sweet potato and chilly creating quite a harmony of taste, while keeping the creamy smooth consistency. It’s one of their newer flavours, and slightly smoky – making it different from the other common flavors. Though I imagine this would be better paired with pita chips or crackers than bread.

The Last Word

Home made hummus, and especially interesting flavors make the products from Yummus  delicious and different. The health benefits of hummus is undeniable, and this is a niche market with very few options. The pricing is good, and portions enough to be shareable. You could order from Yummus via their website.
