The Mid-Autumn or August Moon Festival is a popular harvest festival in China, where families and friends gather together to eat traditional Chinese food, mooncakes and celebrate the moon at its brightest and emanates to its roundest shape! This was right after my trip to Kuala Lumpur, where the festival was called August Moon, and was also celebrated in a similar way. A few of us were invited to Memories of China to experience a handcrafted new menu by Chef William Tong featuring various unique delicacies from the mainland, and of course also to eat moon cakes! We reached the brightly lit restaurant a little after 8, to find it full and buzzing.
Our meal started with Chef special sautéed prawns – just the right bit of sauce and spice on tiger prawns. And the stir fried shredded lamb had a good crunch with veg pickle, though was a tad dry. The steamed eggplant came next. Topped with spicy homemade peanut sauce, this was positively delish, and despite not being a fan of aubergines, I couldn’t get enough of this dish. Stir fried four treasure mushroom stir fried in dark soy was not as rich as it sounds – the various kind of mushrooms wasn’t the best mix for me. Minced pork patty Shanghai style was very well done – wasn’t rough and blended in the flavors quite well. We had this with the vegetarian noodles, comfort food as it comes!
Then came the cauliflower in a creamy white sauce, which seemed more of an Italian preparation, but the preserved chili added the right zest to it – was really good. There are 3 featured sizzlers on the menu. The Silken Tofu in Black Bean Chili sauce was the first one we tried. It was just spectacular – beautiful texture, soft and perfectly complemented with the hot sauce. The stir fried prawns were simple, yet delicious in the garlic butter sauce – lip-smacking! And then there was the traditional moon cake special for the August Moon Festival – dumpling sized with engravings on the crust face, which we had with the Chinese tea.
The menu was a balance of meats and vegetarian dishes, and would be my recommendation for this ongoing festival. Try the chef specials or the signature sizzlers, and the moon cake to experience the August Moon festival in Vivanta by Taj, MG Road.
