A couple of weeks back, the kind folks from Happy Cook reached out to me. I didn’t know much about the concept at the time, and after a chat I was sent 2 samples. I came home to pre-portioned, pre-cleaned and pre-cut meal ingredients in neat boxes. Yes, by ingredients I mean vegetables, spices, meat, even oil. These are actual recipe kits for people who would like to cook, but often get lost in vague recipes and complexities. All ingredients come labeled – all you do is execute the process step by step – following the recipe card, and voila – I actually had Mutton Rogan Josh – packaged by Happy Cook and made by me!

Packaged Kits

The Rogan Josh had good flavor and even the appearance and aromas were similar to what I’ve eaten in restaurants. But of course, here I had complete control over the ingredients and raw materials, they were clean and fresh. As for any adjustment in taste, I could easily tweak the proportions of ingredients around if needed. The color of the dish seems a little rich and dark at first, but the taste was well balanced with the Kashmiri mirch – that attribute to the darker color while maintaining the deep lingering flavors, not just heightening the spice. The cooking time for mutton was longer, as expected.

Mutton Rogan Josh and Steam Rice

Excited with the success of the first dish, Tapash and I tried the next Happy Cook box – Coorgi Mushroom Masala – I was looking for tastes of fresh and plump button mushrooms with black peppercorn, curry leaves and lemon. Again, the steps were simple. I haven’t made mushrooms at home much, but the ease with Happy Cook really helped. Loved this simple dish, the mushrooms were well cooked yet firm, and the spices covering all the flavor bases quite well. And the mutton rogan josh with steam rice was delicious as well!
